Skin and Coal

Two generations of Black British coal miners in Doncaster, Leeds and Nottingham tell their own story. The film is listed and used as educational material by the University of Nottingham, is frequently sourced by academic researchers, and is the only known audio-visual record of Caribbean people’s presence in Britain’s coal industry. Suited to GCSE and A-level History (migration, post-war Britain) and to undergraduate modules in British history, Black studies, labour history and documentary film.

No Virginity, No Nationality

Claudine Boothe’s graduation film, about the virginity tests carried out on South Asian women by Britain’s Home Office in the 1960s and 70s. One of only two known audio-visual records of the practice, prized by the British Film Institute and by Britain’s South Asian communities, and a popular resource for graduate research. Olympic and popular sports traced back to the ancient civilisations of Africa, and a tribute to the athletes who challenged the notion of racial supremacy. Premiered as a Black History Month event with Black History Studies; suited to Black History Month programmes, PE and history departments, and sports studies.
